San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz To Be Honored at 2018 Latinas & Power Symposium

Heroic San Juan Mayor Receive 2018 Latinas & Power Symposium’s Latina Champions Award May 17th

Inspirational Mayor Also Set to Present the Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief Warriors Awards

Hartford, CT – Marilyn Alverio, Founder and Producer of the annual Latinas & Power Symposium, is pleased to announce that Puerto Rico’s heroic mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz is traveling to Hartford to receive the Latina Champions Award. The awards ceremony will be part of Latinas & Power Symposium’s one-day event – now in its 15th year – on Thursday, May 17, 2018, at Hilton Hotel in downtown Hartford, CT.

Event registration for the symposium is required to hear Yulìn Cruz, keynote speaker political analyst Ana Navarro, and the over one dozen other inspirational speakers throughout the day. Registration is $150 with full event details at www.latinasandpower.com.

Since the September 2017 aftermath of Hurricane Maria, Mayor Yulìn Cruz made headlines appearing on international television asking for help with her impassioned plea, “We are dying here,” she said in a September 29 press conference. “I cannot fathom the thought that the greatest nation in the world cannot figure out logistics for a small island of 100 miles by 35 miles. People are drinking off a creek.”

“For her courage, putting her own life and career in danger in order to save the people of Puerto Rico, makes Yulìn Cruz an extraordinary heroine and worthy of our Latina Champions Award,” said Alverio. “Yulìn Cruz will be presenting our Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief Warrior Awards to extraordinary people in our region who stepped up to provide support to those impacted by Maria.”

This honor comes quickly on the heels of TIME Magazine designating Yulìn Cruz one of the 100 Most Influential People of 2018. In an essay written for the issue, Academy Award-winner Benicio Del Toro states, “Cruz’s legacy will be marked by her uncompromising refusal to let anyone ignore the lives of those affected by the hurricane. For this we are forever grateful.”

“Mayor Yulìn Cruz has been a fierce fighter for San Juan and Puerto Rico, speaking truth to power on behalf of her constituents suffering in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria,” added U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal.  “She has been a face and voice of local leadership amidst shameful and disgraceful federal neglect and mismanagement. I welcome her to Connecticut and congratulate her on this well-earned honor.”
