More Than a Dozen Latino Actors Nominated for SAG Awards

Javier Bardem, Ariana DeBose and Oscar Issac are among the nominees competing in the main acting categories of the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards. Ten additional Latino thespians vie for other SAG honors, including Eugenio Derbez, Salma Hayek and Selena Gomez.

This year’s SAG Awards will recognize performances in television and film in 15 individual and group categories.

Ariana DeBose, Javier Bardem and Oscar Isaac

Bardem got a nod for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for playing Desi Arnaz in Being the Ricardos, the biographical drama about the Cuban actor/musician and Lucille Ball--the Hollywood power couple behind the iconic comedy show I Love Lucy. This is the fifth SAG nom for the Spanish actor born in the Canary Islands. Bardem won two guild awards in 2008 for his performance in No Country for Old Men, both as a supporting actor and a member of the film's cast.

DeBose competes in Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her part in West Side Story, the Steven Spielberg remake of the 1961 musical drama of the same title. The Afro-Latina actress from North Carolina plays Anita, the same role that earned Puerto Rican Rita Moreno a Golden Globe and an Oscar six decades ago. DeBose recently won the Golden Globe for the same part.

Guatemalan-born Isaac vies for the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series. He is nominated for Scenes From a Marriage, a drama from HBO Max.

Several other Latino actors compete as part of the casts of films and TV projects.

Derbez received a nom for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for CODA, an Apple TV+ drama about a deaf family. The Mexican actor plays a music teacher named Bernardo Villalobos.

Hayek’s role as psychic Pina Auriemma in the fashion drama House of Gucci earned her a spot among the competitors in Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. That is the second SAG Award nomination for the Mexican actress, having received another for Frida in 2003.

Five Latinos stand out in Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. They are Gomez and Aaron Dominguez from Hulu’s dark comedy Only Murders in the Building, Rose Abdoo and Mark Indelicato from HBO Max’s Hacks and Cristo Fernandez from Apple TV+’s comedy Ted Lasso.

Another three Latinos vie for the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, Nestor Carbonell and Joe Pacheco from Apple TV+’s The Morning Show and Rudy Ramos from Paramount Network’s Yellowstone.

The 28th Annual SAG Awards will be nationally simulcast live on TNT and TBS Feb. 27 from The Barker Hangar in Santa Monica.
