“Filly Brown” Scores Top Imagen Acting Awards

Filly Brown's Gina Rodriguez and Lou Diamond Phillips

The Imagen Foundation 27th Annual Awards gala last week honored the “best and most talented portrayals of Latinos in film” and other categories at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

Lou Diamond Phillips and his co-star Gina Rodriguez, for their work on Sundance breakout’s Filly Brown. Phillips compared his role in Filly to that of Stand and Deliver.  Rodriguez took the award that went to Eva Longoria in 2011. Bella Thorne won for Best Young Actress in television for her work on Disney Channel’s Shake It Up!

Beating out Dora the Explorer in the Best Children’s Programming was HBO Latino’s El Perro y El Gato.

Patricia Riggen took the Best Director for a Feature Film for her work on Girl in Progress, a film that received four nominations and secured two wins. The second going to 16-year old Cierra Ramirez for Best Supporting Actress, who starred alongside Eva Mendes.

Alexa Vega was so excited after winning her award for Best Actress in Television, she dropped and broke her award… whoops! Jenni Rivera was overwhelmed with tears of joy as she accepted the 2012 Imagen President’s Award.

Notable absences: Casa De Mi Padre‘s Diego Luna, CSI: Miami‘s Eva La Rue, Patricia Riggen and Psych‘s James Roday were among winners who did not attend.

The most rewarding moments were hearing from our Latino youth. The lead voice of Dora the Explorer, 11-year-old Fatima Ptacek was beaming with Latina pride. “I always try to make sure people know that I’m Latina,” she said in a media interview.
