If Not for The Revenant Latinos Would be Almost Invisible at This Year’s Oscars
Early this morning the president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Cheryl Boone Isaacs along with directors Guillermo Del Toro and Ang Lee, and actor John Krasinski announced the nominations for the 88th Annual Academy Award during a news conference which took place at the Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills at the Academy. The list of nominees, talent both in front of the camera as well as behind the scenes were announced for films released during 2015.
On February 28th, Chris Rock will host the Oscars from the stage of the Dolby Theater at the Hollywood & Highland Center. ABC will air the Oscars live at 7am ET which will be broadcast live to more than 225 countries.
As expected Alejandro G. Iñárritu was nominated as Best Director for The Revenant which on to garner ten more nominations: Best Picture; Leonardo DiCaprio, for Best Actor; and Tom Hardy for Best Supporting Actor.

The Revenant also swept the creative awards categories: Best cinematography Emmanuel Lubezki; Costume Design Jacqueline West; Best Editing Stephan Mirrione; Makeup and Hairstyling; Production Design (Jack Fisk); Best Sound Editing (Martin Hernandez and Lon Bender); Best Sound Mixing (Jon Taylor, Frank A. Montaño)
Were it not for Iñárritu who created the jobs that enabled the few Latinos to be nominated for an Oscar the year, once again the Latino presence would be almost non-existent
The only other two Oscar nominations that were not tied to The Revenant went to Gabriel Osorio and Pato Escala for Best Animated Short category and for Colombia’s nomination for Best Foreign Film with Embrace the Serpent.
