Washington, D.C — The Kennedy Center Honors have announced the outstanding group of honorees for 2017, and among the list is Cuban singer-songwriter Gloria Estefan.
Estefan, started her career with the Miami Sound Machine as the singer and has gone on to win seven Grammy Awards. She awarded important recognition for her extraordinary career and her lifelong contribution to the performing arts. Her life story is currently the focus of the On Your Feet Broadway musical.
Also recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Estefan is planning to speak with President Donald Trump about the increasing anti-immigrant backlash this year. She plans and telling him during the White House reception, “Mr. President, as a proud immigrant of this country, it’s very important for me that you see the wonderful contributions we have made.”
Gloria Estefan was born on September 1, 1957 in Havana, Cuba as Gloria María Milagrosa Fajardo García. She met her soon to be husband Emilio Estefan Jr. when she joined the Miami Sound Machine. They were married on September 2, 1978. and have two children, Nayib and Emily, both who follow in their parents steps and are in the music industry.
“The Kennedy Center Honors the extraordinary careers of five artists whose talent and ingenuity have enriched and shaped cultural life in America,” Kennedy Center Chairman David M. Rubenstein said in a statement.
Rounding out the honorees are the first hip-hop artist to be honored, LL Cool J, actrees/dancer Carmen de Lavallade, American television writer and producer Normal Lear (One Day at a Time, Archie Bunker) and singer Lionel Richie.
The Kennedy Center Honors gala will be broadcast on CBS on December 26th.
