The Dirty Girls Social Club movie to be made by Latinas for Latinas one dollar at time
Los Angeles, CA – On June 21, 2013 UpLatino will be begin a campaign named the “Million Latina March in Hollywood.” to support the making of the film The Dirty Girls Social Club The film is based from the award winning by NY Times and USA Today bestselling book of the same name by author Alisa Valdes. The theory is that if a million Latinas donate one dollar, the film can be made about Latinas, for Latinas, by Latinas. Valdes will be present at this event in Downtown Los Angeles.
Hollywood has been famous for consecutively relying on outdated ethnic stereotypes that limit storytelling and the ability to reach Latino market. Valdes has been frustrated by top studio decision makers and has continuously halted development due to misrepresentation. After multiple frustrations, she has decided to produce the film herself with help from the community.
The Dirty Girls Social Club is an English-language novel about six young, educated, professional Latina friends who met at Boston University years ago and have been meeting since then, at what they call their “sucia” meetings.
“Hollywood doesn’t know who we are,” says UpLatino and Get Wise Latina founder Gina Linn Espinoza. “They don’t know that when Latinas get together, we talk about buying houses, investing, and changing the world. The making of this film is an opportunity to show Hollywood our buying power.
