Real Women Have Curves 10th Anniversary Event Tribute to Lupe Ontiveros

Hollywood, CA– The American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theatre and Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival will present an evening celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the award-winning film “Real Women Have Curves” with special guest, Josefina López, on Thursday, September 6, 2012 at the American Cinemtheque at The Egyptian Theatre, 6712 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood, CA  90028.

The event, which kicks off with a Josefina Lopez book signing of her book, Real Women Have Curves and Other Plays, then a special screen of the film, capped with a Q&A session, will also include the announcement of a new scholarship Lopez is establishing in the memory of her late friend and colleague, Lupe Ontiveros who co-starred with America Ferrera in the film Real Women Have Curves.

About Real Women….

A film adapted from Lopez’s award-winning plan, Real Women Have Curves (NewMarket Films), is a story about a first-generation Mexican-American teenager Ana (America Ferrera) who is fresh out of high school and navigating the difficult decision between a full scholarship to Columbia University and family pressure to stay in East Los Angeles and work with her mother Carmen (Lupe Ontiveros) and sister Estela (Ingrid Oliu) at a downtown sewing factory.

The film co-stars George Lopez as Mr. Guzman.  Director Patricia Cardoso’s moving feature made a splash at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival, winning a Special Audience Award for the director Patricia Cardoso.

The Sundance Film Festival proved to be a pivotal moment for the film’s stars and filmmakers. It launched America Ferrera’s career, and both Ferrera and Lupe Ontiveros on the first ever Jury for Acting.  The film’s screenwriters, Josefina López and George LaVoo, won the Sundance’s Humanitas Prize for Screenwriting.

The film, filmmakers and its stars went on to win many more awards: Lupe Ontiveros (Imagen Award as Best Supporting Actress); Producer Effie Brown (Independent Spirit Award capturing the Producers Award). Ferrera was also nominated for Best Debut Performance for the 2003 Independent Sprit Awards.  The film also won several special recognitions at international film festivals like the San Sebastián Film Festival.

“The film was the first movie made by HBO to receive theatrical release,” said Maud Nadler, former Sr. HBO VP.

America Ferrera went on to become a Golden Globe, Emmy, and Screen Actors Guild Award-winning actress for her work on ABC’s hit sitcom Ugly Betty.

The American Ciematheque at the Egyptian Theatre’s box office is selling tickets at $11 each for General Admission; $9 for Seniors (65 and over) and Students with current I.D. and $7 for American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theatre Members.

The box office opens one and half hour before the first program of the day/evening and closes 30 minutes after the last film of the evening begins.
