McAllen, TX – The 23rd Annual CineSol Film Festival 2016 runs from November 19-20, at the Cine El Rey theater located at 311 S 17th St, McAllen, TX 78501. The festival has programmed twenty independent films over two days including five documentaries, two features, and thirteen shorts. The festival international entries hail from Uruguay, Spain, Germany and Australia.
CineSol open with Uncensored: Narco Journalism directed by Steph Martinez, a 52 minute documentary. Through the lives of three Colombian journalists, the film recounts the peril journalists endured while covering Colombia’s narcoterrorism violence in the 1980s during the reign of Pablo Escobar’s Medellin cartel, the 1990s during the rise of corruption in the military and 2000s during a behind-closed-doors oppressive administration.
CineSol Film Festival is a showcase festival that celebrates achievement in the art of filmmaking and is dedicated to furthering the art, craft and business of screenwriters and filmmakers and recognizing their artistic contributions. The festival supports the work of aspiring and established filmmakers by enhancing public awareness of their artistic endeavors and by encouraging dynamic and long-lasting community alliances.
CineSol made its historic debut in September 1993 in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month. It provided the Texas Border Region with its first film festival ever, including cultural art events in the Mexican cities of Matamoros and Reynosa, Tamaulipas. The festival has also traveled throughout the region, bringing voice and vision through film and video directly to border communities.
