Breakout Star Gina Rodriguez “Filly Brown” Opens NYILFF August 13-19


Filly Brown and Lemon Make Their Big Debuts As The Opening And Closing For The Event

As the premier Urban Latino Film event in the country, HBO presents the New York International Latino Film Festival on August 13-19, where the Latino community is celebrated by the most talented works of today’s filmmakers in the U.S. and Latin America.

Opening Night of the festivities will start by premiering Filly Brown, a film about a raw, young, Los Angeles hip-hop artist who faces hard-hitting choices as she gets discovered for rap stardom and is left to choose the fame over her building blocks, including her friends, that did the job of shaping her into the talented rapper she is. With a fusing cast, directed by Youssef Delara and Micheal D. Olmos, and introducing sensational actress Gina Rodriguez (Go For It, Our Family Wedding) as the raw Filly Brown, the film is an anticipated movement to conquer the airwaves.  Filly Brown premieres Tuesday, 7:00 P.M. at the Clearview Cinemas Screen 7 with an encore Tuesday, 8:00 P.M. Screen 6.

A film following the steps of a comeback, Tony Award winner, Lemon Andersen tries to battle demons from his past at New York’s Public Theater. Directed and produced by Laura Brownson and Beth Levison, and accompanied by music of the tasteful acts of Kanye West, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, and Aloe Blacc, Lemon is Mos Def-initely to touch the audience and end the night of festivities. with a bang. The closing night presentation is set to premier on Saturday, 6:30 P.M. at the Clearview Cinemas Screen 6 for the 1st premiering and the 2nd encore screening on Saturday, 7:00 P.M. Screen 7.

Along with Elliot Loves, the comedy-drama about a striving Dominican-American trying to survive obstacles that come her way, and the world premier of The Girl Is In Trouble, a murder mystery, the Latino Festival will bring out the cultural and diversity of the Latino Community that we always love to see and relate to.

The NYLIFF is presented by HBO. The festival kicks off on Monday, August 13th with a 15th anniversary presentation of Selena at Cinema Under The Stars, a free outdoor screening presented by HBO at St. Nicholas Park on St. Nicholas Avenue and 135th Street in Manhattan. Opening NIght on Tuesday, August 14, through Closing Night on Saturday, August 18, panel discussions and other festival activities will take place at Chelsea Clearview Cinemas, 260 West 23rd Street, NYC 10011. The 2012 NYILFF Awards presentation will take place on Sunday, August 19.
