FROGTOWN ARTWALK Pops Up Over the L.A. River

Artist Roberto Gutierrez

Contemporary Artist Roberto Gutierrez has made a name for himself by capturing silhouettes of his beloved native city, Los Angeles. His paintings and works on paper preserve popular and treasured sites that have been part of the City of Angeles for decades.

Gutierrez will make a rare appearance at this year’s FROGTOWN ARTWALK, on Saturday, September 22, 2018, 4:00 to 10:00 pm. His Pop Up exhibit of black and white samples from several of his most recent art suites, will be exhibited at Goodman Packing & Shipping, located at 3009 Gilroy Street.

“It brings back many childhood memories being back to the L.A. River area that I recall being called ‘canta ranas,’ because of the echoes of the frogs singing,” Gutierrez reminisced. “Honored that Paul Tevess [manager of Goodman Packing & Shipping], has provided the space to accommodate some of my large pieces.”

Gutierrez’s sampling of his 15 pieces on exhibit, consist of:

6th Street Bridge – Spectacular acrylics on canvas, black and white paintings of the historic bridge just before its demolition in 2017. The bridge was and remains a many-splendored metaphor for Gutierrez. As a child, he walked it with his mother to get to downtown LA, where he earned money as a shoeshine boy.

Pillars of 6th Street Bridge – Abstract paintings, acrylics on canvas to enthrall.

Alcatraz, San Francisco – Captures the infamous island, as it appears today, a rock haunted with its tragic secrets and history. Paintings are works on paper, tie and dye and Ghash.

New York City & Central Park – Black and white, works on paper, Sumi ink and water colors, encapsulate the magic of a famous skyline and park.

Trump & Cohorts Dining – a parody of DiVinci’s Last Supper, Black and white, acrylic on canvas. Political junkies will have something new to debate.

And, no doubt, a few extra surprises to delight art aficionados.

The 2018 Frogtown Artwalk is brought to you by the Elysian Valley Arts Collective (EVAC), the City of Los Angeles’ Department of Cultural Affairs, and is co-sponsored by LYFT, LA City Council District 13 and Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell. Stroll, bike, or hitch a ride on a series of FREE pedicabs along the LA River path to move from location to location. There will be three official ride share drop-off stations in North, South and Mid Point of the event route with volunteers directing visitors.

Frogtown Artwalk stretches alongside the L.A. River bike path from Fletcher Ave. in the North down to Glover Place in the South.
