The East of Broadway Spring Season will take place and is opening next week with The Vault: Bankrupt. This year marks our 6th year as operators of the The LATC and we have overcome many challenges and obstacles to produce our most ambitious year of programming to date. The East of Broadway Spring Season opening next week presents a series of plays that are not only diverse in their representation of the communities that make up Los Angeles, but also in addressing major issue affecting us all. May 5 – May 20 Acclaimed playwright Lisa Loomer pens the first production in Cornerstone Theater Company’s Hunger Cycle with an original work, Café Vida. Chabela and Luz are two rival homegirls ready to leave the gang life and begin anew at Café Vida, the only place in the city that gives young women and their shady pasts a genuine second chance to start a new life free of violence. It’s here that these former enemies pull themselves up by their shoelaces, maintain a steady diet of self-respect, learn to compost, tend a garden, julienne an onion and take your lunch order with a smile and a heaping side of transformation.
Produced in partnership with Homeboy Industries and Homegirl Café. Community partners include Hunger Action LA, Solano Canyon Community Garden, and the Urban & Environmental Policy Institute at Occidental College. Café Vida is the first play in Cornerstone Theater’s recently launched Hunger Cycle, a series of nine world premiere plays investigating the universal and urgent need for food and how filling that need has the power to transform individuals and communities. Refugee Nation

A mother lives alone in the darkness. A father struggles to forget a lost war. A son battles in the streets of urban America. A daughter searches for answers in her community. Refugee Nation is about a young generation struggling to understand their history and the silence of an elder generation still healing form the traumas of war. What can we learn from the wounds of a war over 30 years ago in the hope to find healing? (Based on the stories of Laotian refugees in the U.S.) After touring the country for over 5 years, Refugee Nation is proud be returning home to premiere the completed work for the first time in Los Angeles.
