New York, NY– On Saturday, November 10th the Producers Guild of America (PGA) held its fifth annual Produced By: New York conference at One Time Warner Center in New York, which featured many of the biggest producers and filmmakers working in entertainment.
The popular session, “Producing Masterclass: The Creative Collaborations,” is an annual feature of Produced By: New York and highlights a theatrical film producer with a key collaborator –– director, writer, actor, cinematographer, production designer, editor or composer––to discuss how their partnerships provide defining elements of their memorable films, setting them on course for the awards season. For the first time, “Masterclass” was broken out into four distinct sessions with three focused on narrative features and one devoted exclusively to documentaries. Academy Award®-winning producer Bruce Cohen (“American Beauty”) and VP for Pharrell Williams and his company, i am OTHER, Mimi Valdés (Hidden Figures) led the discussions.
Cohen moderated two Feature Producing Masterclasses. The first featured The Favourite director/producer Yorgos Lanthimos and actor Joe Alwyn; If Beale Street Could Talk producer Adele Romanski and editor Joi McMillon; and Widows director, writer, and producer Steve McQueen and producer Iain Canning. The second highlighted BlacKkKlansman producer Jason Blum and writer Kevin Willmott; Crazy Rich Asians producer John Penotti and actor Ronny Chieng; Mary Poppins Returns director/producer Rob Marshall and lead actress Emily Blunt; and Roma producer Gabriela Rodriguez and lead actress Yalitza Aparicio.

Valdés moderated the Documentary Producing Masterclass, which focused on RBG producers and directors Julie Cohen and Betsy West, “Three Identical Strangers” producer Becky Read and director Tim Wardle, Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, and director and producer Morgan Neville and producer Caryn Capotosto. She also moderated the conference’s closing Feature Producing Masterclass with “Black Panther” producer Kevin Feige and writer Joe Robert Cole; Can You Ever Forgive Me? producer Anne Carey and director Marielle Heller; First Man producer Wyck Godfrey and production designer Nathan Crowley; and A Quiet Place director, writer, and executive producer John Krasinski and producer Andrew Form.
“Late-Night Laughs” featured a discussion with executive producers and showrunners about the unique challenges of producing the funny on different platforms. Chris Licht (Executive Producer and Showrunner, (The Late Show with Stephen Colbert) moderated the discussion with Jen Flanz (Executive Producer and Showrunner, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah), Mike Shoemaker (Producer, Late Night with Seth Meyers) and Prashanth Venkataramanujam (Co-Creator and Executive Producer, Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj).
New to this year’s conference, five “Deeper Dive” roundtable discussions. Each of these intimate sessions was topic-based and off-the-record, designed to provide an additional opportunity within the conference for PGA members to discuss a range of subjects from career development, to physical production and financing. These sessions included: “Financing and Crafting ‘Won’t You Be My Neighbor?’” (sponsored by AARP) featuring director and producer Morgan Neville and producer Caryn Capotosto, facilitated by producer Julie Goldman; “Shooting on Location: Optimizing Your Production Costs” (sponsored by Media Central), facilitated by producer William Horberg and featuring Media Central’s Jay Schlossberg and producers Mari Jo Winkler and Santiago Quiñones; “Developing and Producing ‘A Quiet Place’” (sponsored by AARP), featuring producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, facilitated by producer Nina Yang Bongiovi; “The Unscripted Landscape” (sponsored by Discovery), featuring Senior Vice President of Development for TLC Jason Sarlanis and facilitated by producers Kay Rothman and Scott Thigpen; and “Breaking the Rules: Taking Your Career to the Next Level,” featuring producers Claudine Marrotteand Jake Abraham and facilitated by producers Dana Kuznetzkoff and Kristine Pregot.
