Latinos Score Five Oscars Tonight!!

Oscar Winers:  Iñárritu, Lubeski, Rivera, Osorio and Escala

Although diversity did not triumph tonight at the 2016, several Latinos were the winners of the most coveted award in entertainment.  Each picked up their golden statuette in front of Hollywood’s elite and made their speeches, thanking the Academy while over 80 million people in 220 countries watched around the world.

Sadly the telecast was for the most part a only a Black and White affair, while the Academy and host Chris Rock missed a golden opportunity to make this telecast a multicultural experience by including a palette of color.  During his monlouge Rock only mentioned the lack Black nominees.  The skits were inclusive of only one minority, blacks.

This year there were five Latinos nominees and four presenters.  Four of the nominees took home the Oscar.  The other ethnicities did not fare as well.

The four Latinos invited to present were Oscar winner Benicio Del Toro (Traffic), Sofia Vergara and Louie CK who was in the nominated Trumbo this year.

However, four Latinos nominees went home with their Oscars.  Jonas Rivera producer of Disney-Pixar’s Inside Out accepted the Oscar for best animated film along with director Pete Docter.  Chile’s Gabriel Osorio and Pato Escala took home their very first Oscar for their home country for BestAnimated Short Film Bear Story.

Emmanuel Lubeski took home a history making third consecutive Oscar for Best Cinematography for The Revenant, a feat accomplished by no other cinematographer  His first two Oscars being 2013’s Gravity and 2014’s Birdman.

However, the crowning moment tonight was Alejandro González Iñárritu‘s Oscar win for Best Director for his film The Revenant, this is his second consecutive Oscar win.  Last year he took the same prize for The Birdman.

“There is a line in the film that [Glass says] to his mixed-race son, ‘They don’t listen to you, they just see the color of your skin,’” he continued. “So what a great opportunity to our generation to really liberate ourselves from all prejudice and, you know, this tribal thinking, and make sure for once and forever that the color of the skin become as irrelevant as the length of our hair.”

Although Latinos were represented at the Oscars in small numbers, they took home some top prizes.
