Jay Hernandez stars as El Diablo in Suicide Squad Which Premieres in August 201
Los Angeles, CA – From director David Ayer (Fury, End of Watch) comes Suicide Squad, starring Oscar nominee Will Smith (Ali, The Pursuit of Happyness), Oscar winner Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club), Jay Hernandez (Takers, Grindhouse) and Oscar nominee Viola Davis (The Help, Doubt). The film opens worldwide in 3D, and in 2D, and in select IMAX 3D theaters beginning August 5, 2016.
David Ayer began his career in film as a writer in 2001 when he wrote Training Day. His career made a major jump when wrote, directed and produced End of Watch, which was number four on film critic Roger Ebert’s best film list of 2012, he called the film “one of the best police movies in recent years”. Ayers casting choices are always out of the “Hollywood box” and stand out for the inclusion of persons of color. In the case of End of Watch he cast Michael Pena in his first co-lead role alongside Jake Gyllenhaal, while also casting Natalie Martinez and America Ferrera in secondary roles.
In Suicide Squad Ayer has assembled a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, providing them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and sending them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. Ayers once again cast actors that reflects the diversity in America.
U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?
The DC Comics character arsenal cast also stars Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Thor: The Dark World), Ike Barinholtz (Neighbors), Jai Courtney (Insurgent) and Scott Eastwood (Fury). It is produced by Charles Roven and Richard Suckle, with Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers. Jay Hernandez stars as El Diablo a former gang member who can summon flames. He sets his character apart from his teammates as he “just wants to stay out of the fight, while most of the Squad members are happy to get out there and fill people.
Ayer’s behind-the-scenes creative team includes director of photography Roman Vasyanov (Fury, End of Watch), production designer Oliver Scholl (Edge of Tomorrow), editor John Gilroy (Pacific Rim), costume designer Kate Hawley (The Hobbit Trilogy) and Oscar-nominated visual effects supervisor Jerome Chen (Stuart Little, Fury, The Amazing Spider-Man films). The music is by Oscar-winning composer Steven Price (Gravity).
