Its a Good Year at the Oscars for Latinos
Hollywood, CA — Demian Bichir is on the top of the list of Oscar nominees! Yes the Oscar list of nominees (announced January 24th) on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences website ostarts off with Bichir’s name. He is in good company for the title of best Actor in a Leading role with such Hollywood icons as George Clooney (The Descendants), Brad Pitt , (Moneyball), Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and French actor Jean Dujardin for his performance in The Artist.
Among the list of nominees are several other Latinos: Bérénice Bejo for Best Supporting Actress in The Artist; For Best Animated Feature Film (Chico & Rita) Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal; for Best Cinematography we have Emmanuel Luebezki for his work on Tree of Life; for Music/Original Score, Alberto Iglesias for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy; and Sergio Mendes for Music/Originial Song for Real in Rio for the movie Rio.
This is only the second time a Mexican actor has been nominated for playing a Mexican, the first being Anthony Quinn who was not only nominated but he took home an Oscar for his portrayal of Eufemio in Elia Kazan’s Viva Zapata. Chalk that up for the history books.
Bichir was brilliant as a gardener in East L.A. who struggles to keep his son away from gangs and immigration agents while trying to give his son the opportunities he never had. It is a truly Oscar worthy performance.
