Los Angeles, CA – It was an idea that has turned into a the largest Dia de Los Muertos celebration at any cemetery in the United States. Hollywood Forever is back with its 14th Annual Dia de Los Muertos Festival at Hollywood Forever Cemetery on Saturday, November 2nd, 2013. Festivities will take place at the historic park from 12pm until 12am.
Hollywood Forever Cemetery is one of the oldest memorial parks in Los Angeles. The owners of Hollywood Forever and presenters of the Dia de Los Muertos celebration are genuinely focused in striving to bestow a memorable family affair while embracing the celebratory process of death and dying by providing a historically recognized cultural setting for this festive and sacred observance. This Pre-Columbian celebration is traditionally a Mexican holiday now celebrated throughout the world and in other cultures.
Altars are the soul of the Dia de Los Muertos Festival at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Over 100 altars will be created by members of the community and may compete to win one of the three $3000 prizes. This year’s festival theme is “El Magico Mundo de Los Alebrijes” – “The Magical World of Alebrijes”. As part of this year’s altar competition, altars displaying Alebrijes (brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures) may compete in the “Best Theme of the Event Altar” category. Other categories that will be judged for an opportunity to win one of the three cash prizes are, “Best Traditional Altar” and “Best Contemporary Altar”.
In addition to the breathtaking altar displays and altar competition, the Dia de Los Muertos Festival will feature a vibrant traditional procession with traditional Aztec blessings and Regional Musical-Dance group dedications. This joyful celebration of our ancestors will
also include music and dance performances on 3 stages to entertain audiences throughout the park. For art enthusiasts, an art exhibition in the Cathedral Mausoleum curated by Luis Villanueva will be open to the public and a children’s art project area presented by LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) will offer future artists an opportunity to express their creative side. This festival would not be complete without arts and crafts vendors and food booths providing the best in typical Mexican food from across Los Angeles.
