Yvette Yates has paid her dues and now it’s paying off. She recently starred as Luz in Inherent Vice a film adaptation based on Thomas Pynchon’s book by the same name. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson the film opened wide this past January, and was nominated for two Oscars. She starred alongside movie greats like Josh Brolin, Joaquin Phoenix, Benicio del Toro, Reese Witherspoon and many other impressive talents. As Yates’ star rises so does the budget of the films, Inherent Vice with a budget of $20 million is the biggest film she has worked on.
But Yates began her career starring in an independent short, Nina Quebrada, with a budget of $40,000 back in 2007. From there she has worked steadily amassing an impressive list of credits that have given her the opportunity to work in films of a variety of genres from drama to comedy (Without Men), to horror films like Sorority Party Massacre.
We recently caught up with her at this year’s Slamdance Film Festival where she was attending for the screening of her latest film Bloodsucking Bastards a comedy/horror flick directed by Brian James O’Connell which was picked up for distribution by Shout! Factory.
True to form Yates is already in development for her next projects, one of which is is the drama Tesoro written by Sandy Baumann and to be directed by Jon Keyees.
She is also attached to star in Mikki and Lola along with co-star Patricia Rae, a sort of “Thelma & Louise” which takes place in Mexico after Lola accidentally kills her boyfriend. Mexico’s safe haven proves dangerous to their health when they’re lured into the mysterious world of El Gato Grande.
Whatever the budget is, Yates continues to work and grow her body of work, as her star continues to rise.
