Univision Ends Contract With Primer Impacto Host Natalia Cruz

Natalia Cruz

Miami, FL –  According to insiders, Colombian journalist and news anchor Natalia Cruz has been dismissed by Spanish-speaking network Univision. The Primer Impacto personality has not made any comments on her dismissal.

The Emmy-award winning journalist, who in 2011 was promoted to Anchor for Primer Impacto Extra, had recently celebrated her 12th year anniversary with Univision. On Mother’s Day, Cruz also took to social media a picture with her children and husband Jairo Cruz.

She attended Universidad del Norte, in Barranquilla, Colombia where she majored in Social Communications and Journalism. In early 2000, Cruz moved to New York and worked for Spanish language Public TV. She was nominated the following year for five awards, winning another EMMY Award, this time for Best Newscast in 2005. Additionally, Cruz won the ACE Award as Best News Anchor in 2005.

According to a Univision spokesperson, Edición Digital anchor Javier Olivares is not longer with the company as well. Olivares appeared in a news brief on Thursday morning but did not anchor the noon show.

It is unknown if the dismissal of Cruz and Olivares is part of the new round of layoffs announced just last month by Univision, which has been struggling with a debt left from its leveraged buyout a decade ago.

In a statement, two months ago, the company said the new round of layoffs were part of a “multi-year transformation” of the company’s operations.

“We are focused on challenging ourselves to pursue strategies that strengthen our competitive edge and best position us for the future,” the company said. “As part of this process, we have made the difficult decision to eliminate some positions across various UCI business units.

Univision’s chief rival Telemundo has seen its ratings increased thanks to a strong investment from NBCUniversal, and has challenged Univision’s market share dominance for the first time in more than 20 years.
