POPS (El Barrio’s pop-up artist series) presents
“THROWBACK The photography of Edwin Pagán” – Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 2pm.
POPS is located at 101 East 102nd Street, New York.
A special slide presentation and discussion with photographer and cultural activist Edwin Pagán — of SEIS DELSUR fame — who has spent the greater part of his life documenting the Puerto Rican experience in New York, from Fort Apache to Los Sures to El Barrio. In this talk, Pagán plumbs his archive discovering lost gems from the 1980’s and 90’s — negatives protected in cellophane sleeves buried in timeworn leather camera cases and crumbling brown shoeboxes.
A revelation in the historical rhythm of New York City’s largest Latino population that helped shape the politics and culture of the times. Pagán will present a selection from his extensive body of photographic work. He is also giving us a first look at AREÍTOS EN EL BARRIO, sample images from his current work-in-progress that documents the last vestiges of certain cultural traditions in Spanish Harlem/El Barrio now on the brink of disappearing in the wake of expanding gentrification and other processes of cultural dissolution. A Q&A will follow the talk.
