“The Latina Christmas Special” Brings Holiday Cheer and Laughs to LATC

The Latina Christmas Special

The holidays are here so might as well grin and enjoy them!  How many of you have stories of the Thanksgiving dinner that went wrong or the panic of getting Christmas just right, turkey or menudo?  Ham of lechoso?  And the more “Latino traditional” the celebration, you know the louder it gets!  Ah yes!  Feliz Navidad.  The Latina Christmas Special brings you that and the most hilarious “I can relate to that” moments that will have you laughing your way through the holidays.  Created by Diana Yanez, written by and starring critically acclaimed Latina comediennes Diana Yanez, Sandra Valls and Maria Russell.  Geoffrey Rivas directs  the five week run (November 21 (Press Opening Night) – December 20, 2015) for the Los Angeles Theater Center, 514 South Spring Street (DTLA).  Discounted previews will be presented on Thursday and Friday, November 19 and 20, 2015.

The Latina Christmas Special allows you to eavesdrop on three Latinas’ no holds barred holiday “chisme” fest when they get together to dish about everything from moms to cucarachas to Farrah Fawcett, reminiscing about Christmases past (and fantasies) spent with familia and loved ones.  From the hot Miami Christmas celebrations spent by Yanez’s (Margaret Cho’s The Sensuous Woman) during her Miami upbringing; to Larado, TX born Tejana Sandra Valls (Showtime’s Latin Divas of Comedy) Mexican “navidad” joyous and painful memories of family; and Maria Russell (FX’s: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) Mexican/Lithuanian holiday hilarity, this show is the best way to connect with your special holiday stories, because at the end of the day that is what Christmas is all about — dysfunction at it’s loving best!

The Latina Christmas Special is back by popular demand, after two straight years of sold-out, standing room only performances.  The Latina Christmas Special had its world premiere in 2013 at the The Elephant Theatre Company in Hollywood selling out its only four performances.  In 2014 they moved to the Theatre Asylum in Hollywood, CA to nine sold out performances, again produced by Atomictuna Productions and Combined Art Form. Now at LATC under the direction of Rivas who is a founding member of the Latino Theater Company and a NAACP award recipient for his solo show Beautiful), The Latina Christmas Special moves into the big house . “This show has much more potential to reach a wider and more diverse audience, which we could achieve by bringing it to the Los Angeles Theatre Center,” said Rivas.  “I approached the three ladies in the cast [and]  much to my surprise they liked what I had brought to the table and thus here we are today.”

Creator Yanez calls The Latina Christmas Special the little show that could.  “Each year since we started, our show has grown significantly.  Now, this year, in 2015, we are thrilled to have the Latino Theater Company presenting our show for 20 performances in a new fully realized staged production under the direction of the wonderful Geoffrey Rivas.”

The Latina Christmas Special is made possible by LATC  and its Artistic Director José Luis Valenzuela, with Michael Navarro (Set Designer); Julian Fernandez (Lighting Designer); Ivan Robles (Sound Designer): Socorro Gamboa (LATC Community Outreach Coordinator); Amber Espinoza-Jones (Stage Manager); Wayne Nakasone (LATC Technical Director); Xavi Moreno (LATC Marketing Associate and Graphic Artist); Kurt Hall (Pre-Production Photographer); Chaz Photographics (Production Photographer).
