Film Punk Films’ paranormal thriller, The Boatman, has nabbed three Imagen Award nominations, as was announced by the Imagen Foundation last Friday. The 32nd Annual Imagen Awards will be presented on Friday, August 18th at The Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills, CA.
Nominated for Best Picture, The Boatman is an award-winning film co-written and directed by Best Director nominee, Greg Morgan and stars Oscar Torre, who is a contender in the Best Actor category. The film’s journey to the Imagen Award nominations consisted of a film festival journey where The Boatman earned awards at Idylwild, BLOW-UP Chicago International, Tailgrass Independent, Macabre, Cinema On The Bayou, Velvet Rope, Georgia Latino, IndieFest, Colorado International, Mexico International, Motor City Nightmares, and Nevada Film Festivals.

The Boatman, according to the LA Times review, “is an absorbing, intriguingly told dramatic thriller set on the U.S.-Mexico border that seems especially well-timed given the fractious state of America’s immigration debate.”
Filming The Boatman was an emotional and cathartic journey for Torre who says he’s thrilled to be nominated for an award that celebrates diversity. “The Imagen Awards are in a league of their own because they are the only entity that recognizes and acknowledges the tremendous contributions made by Latino talent,” said Torre. “I congratulate all the nominees. I’m thrilled for our director, Greg Morgan and everyone who worked on The Boatman. All of us did our best to interpret Greg’s passion and vision.”
The Boatman competes for Best Picture with A Change of Heart (Surprise Film, LLC); Beatriz at Dinner (Roadside Attractions); and How to be a Latin Lover (3Pas Studios). In the Best Director category, Morgan competes with Miguel Arteta (Beatriz at Dinner/Roadside Attractions); Ricardo de Montreiuil (Lowriders/BH TILT); and Kenny Ortega (A Change of Heart/Surprise Film, LLC). Torre’s competition for Best Actor includes: Gabriel Chavarria (Lowriders); Eugenio Derbez (How to be a Latin Lover); Lou Diamond Phillips (Created Equal); Diego Luna (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and Theo Rossi (Lowriders (BH TiLT).
Torre is next set to star in the feature film Lost Soul, directed by John Fu and produced by Bobby Cloud. He also just wrapped Season 5 of the Tyler Perry drama series, The Haves and The Have Nots.
The Imagen Awards is the premier Latino entertainment awards program dedicated to honoring the positive portrayal and creative excellence of Latinos and Latino cultures in television and film. For 32 years, the Imagen Foundation has been at the forefront of championing and celebrating inclusion and diversity in the entertainment industry.
