Sleeping With The Fishes Nominated for Five Imagen Awards

By Annabella Campos

Latin Heat last covered the film screening of Sleeping With The Fishes , the directorial debut by Nicole Gomez Fisher, starring Gina Rodriguez (Jane The Virgin, Filly Brown) Back in 2013 Los Angeles Latino Film Festival.  Recently we learned that Sleeping With The Fishes is nominated for five Imagen Awards. The categories that the film is nominated in are Best Picture, Best Director (Nicole Gomez Fisher), Best Actress (Gina Rodriguez), Best Supporting Actress (Priscilla Lopez), and best Supporting Actress (Ana Ortiz). The Imagen Awards will take place at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on August 1, 2014.

The film did not disappoint, the story is genuine and the performances are authentic and refreshing. Rodriguez plays a recently widowed Alexis “Lexi” Fish. After her husband’s death she ends up back home living with her Jewish father (Tibor Feldman) and her overbearing Puerto Rican mother, played by Tony award-winning actress Priscilla Lopez. Thus begins Lexi’s journey of re-discovery with her zany family playing a major part. Rodriguez’s “Lexi” Fish is emotionally sincere and takes you along her character’s journey very well. Ana Ortiz’s (Devious Maids, Ugly Betty) performance as Lexi’s comic book loving sister is terrifically funny and well delivered too.

Gomez Fisher’s career began as an actress and stand-up comic from Brooklyn.  She was a member ofThe Hot Tamales Live! the Latina comedy tour produced by Kiki Melendez. She went on to write and perform her acclaimed one-woman show, Mixed at the New York Underground Comedy Festival. She just finished writing her second feature, Good Egg, a comedy, as well as spec scripts for Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory.
