There is a revival of the award-winning series Sex and the City in the works on HBO Max and actor Sara Ramirez will play a regular Latin role in it.
Ramirez has joined the cast of And Just Like That…, the title of the reboot of the Primetime Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning series about four New York women who openly talk about sex and the challenges of being a woman in the late 1990s.
Ramirez will co-star alongside three of the original series’ stars, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis, who also serve as exec producers. Actress Kim Cattrall is not part of the revival.
And Just Like That… features Carrie (Parker), Miranda (Nixon) and Charlotte (Davis) navigating the journey from the complicated lives and friendship in their 30s to their even more complicated lives in their 50s. The ten-episode, half-hour series is set to begin production in the Big Apple this summer.
Mazatlan, Mexico-born Ramirez will be a series regular in the role of Che Diaz a non-binary, queer, stand-up comedian that hosts a podcast on which Carrie Bradshaw is regularly featured. Che network producers describe as a “big presence with a big heart whose outrageous sense of humor and progressive, human overview of gender roles” has made the podcast popular.
After receiving the casting news, Ramirez posted on Instagram a photo of the script of And Just Like That… with New York’s night skyline in the background.
The actor was most recently seen on TV on the CBS series Madam Secretary and Disney Junior’s animated series Sofia the First.
“Everyone at And Just Like That… is beyond thrilled that a dynamically talented actor such as Sara Ramírez has joined the Sex and the City family,” says Executive Producer Michael Patrick King. “Sara is a one-of-a-kind talent, equally at home with comedy and drama – and we feel excited and inspired to create this new character for the show.”
The actor is best known as orthopedic surgeon Dr. Callie Torres on ABC’s popular series Grey’s Anatomy, a character featured for about a decade. The medical drama started in 2005 and has earned numerous prizes including four Primetime Emmys. The show earned Ramirez a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series and six Alma Award nominations, according to the website IMDb.com.
Ramirez is also an award-winning theater talent. The actor won a Tony Award and Outer Critics Award for the role as Lady of the Lake in the Broadway musical hit Monty Python’s Spamalot in 2005.
And Just Like That… is also executive produced by Julie Rottenberg, Elisa Zuritsky and John Melfi. Writers include King, Rottenberg, Zuritsky, Samantha Irby, Rachna Fruchbom and Keli Goff. The HBO series Sex and the City was created by Darren Star and based on the book of the same title by Candace Bushnell.
