“I want to personally invite the Latino community to join us,” said Roberto Sanchez. “It is important we attend these type of industry events not only to support each other but to also send a strong and positive message to Hollywood, of how much we value work that depicts our stories and/or projects made by Latinos.”
Lake Los Angeles has is a film festival favorite winning awards, recognitions and positive film reviews since premiering at the Los Angeles Film Festival this past June. At the recent Las Vegas Film Festival, Lake Los Angeles won three coveted awards: Roberto Sanchez, Best Actor. Michael Gioulakis, Best Cinematography. Mike Ott, Best Feature.
Lake Los Angeles is the story of Francisco (Sanchez) a middle-aged Cuban man who works odd construction jobs, and makes money on the side by providing his home as a holding house for illegal immigrants who manage to cross the border from Mexico into the US. Cecilia (Trujillo), a 10-year-old Mexican girl ends up at Francisco’s place waiting for her father to pick her up. When Cecilia’s father fails to deliver the money, the young girl is forced to escape into the desert with only her vast imagination to keep her company. Eloy Mendez delivers an equally impressive performance as the unscrupulous human trafficker aka the ‘coyote.’

“Recently, I heard Bel Hernandez at the NOSOTROS-Latin Heat Holiday Party remind us how important it is to support Latino projects and it struck a cord with me from an incident that happened when our film Lake Los Angeles first screened in Los Angeles in June. I used all my resources (TV, radio, print) along with social media. I promoted everywhere. I figured that because the film had a multi-award winning director, a Latino cast, in Spanish and English, and with a trending immigration storyline, I thought for sure the theater would be filled with Latinos. My FB network has at least 100 friends who are Latino and live in L.A. After the screening as I stood there doing the Q&A, I leaned over and whispered to one of the producers, ‘where are the Latinos?’ We had three screenings in L.A. and few came out despite the heavy promotion. This was very disappointing. Sure the screenings were successful and two were sold-out and the third was 90% sold… just not by ‘mi gente.’ So to paraphrase Ms. Hernandez, ‘we need to stop talking the talk and start walking the walk!’ Latinos, I hope you’ll join us.”
Lake Los Angeles is Mike Ott’s third installment of his Antelope Valley Desert Trilogy (Littlerock, Pearblossom Hwy), which outline the complications and adversities immigrants who manage to survive crossing the border must face in order to stay alive – both mentally and physically.
