Robert Rodriguez-Danny Trejo Sequel “Machete Kills” Acquired by Open Road


The Robert Rodriguez sequel Machete Kills has been acquired for U.S. distribution by Open Road Films. Machete Kills reunites Danny Trejo, the badass former Mexican Federale with blade-savvy skills, and Michelle Rodriguez. Also joining the cast are Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Charlie Sheen, Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, Demian Bichir, Alexa Vega, Vanessa Hudgens, Cuba Gooding Jr, William Sadler, Marko Zaror and Mel Gibson also star. Kyle Ward wrote the script based on a story by Marcel Rodriguez and Rodriguez. Some love from Open Road CEO Tom Ortenberg sealed the deal.

In Machete Kills, the sequel to Machete, Trejo is recruited by the U.S. president for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man — he must take down a madman revolutionary and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war and anarchy across the planet. Hmmm, sounds a little political real.

The last film was pure grind house… gore with lots of blood and guts flying every which way and a lot of tongue in check humor. In this new film, Gibson plays the villain, which should be interesting to see how the veteran controversial star reinvents himself and his career.

Rodriguez produced with Aaron Kaufman and Iliana Nikolic through their QuickDraw Productions banner, along with Sergei Bespalov of Aldamisa Films, Alexander Rodnyansky of AR Films, and Rick Schwartz of Overnight Films. The film is expected to have a wide release in 2013.

If Tyler Perry is the “super server of Black films to his niche” then Robert Rodriguez is king of his action genre of films that cast Latinos in films with universal story lines that appeal general market audiences.  Rodriguez kicked off his career with the award-winning El Mariachi (1992), a film that made him the legend of independent, ultra-low budget filmmaking. His further career is a sign for young filmmakers that even the wildest dreams may come true if you are brave enough to follow your own path. Since then, Robert has written, directed, edited, and/or produced around 12 movies (as of 2007), including: Desperado (1995), From Dusk Till Dawn (1996),  The Faculty (1998) and Spy Kids (2001) and Spy Kids Franchise, and Machete (2010).
