The recent unexpected death of actress and activist Lupe Ontiveros on July 26, 2012 has hit the Latino entertainment community like a dagger through our hearts. It just seems unthinkable that Lupe will no longer be around to walk the red carpet, support her favorite non-profit organizations like Mexican American Legal Defense Education Fund (MALDEF), Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF), United Farm Workers (UFW), Latino Theater Center (LATC), Los Angeles Commission on AIDS, and Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness, Inc. (GLAD).
Lupe was a woman larger than life with a powerful spirit. She was a true friend to everyone she embraced, including her favorite organizations. She was an activist whose voice and support help elevate Latinos in the U.S. Every role she ever portrayed she infused humanity and respect and made Latinos proud that she was representing them on the big and little screens. The Ontiveros family has graciously opened the services (both memorial mass and funeral/interment) to the public in order for the hundreds of fans can pay their respects to a beloved television and film icon.
