Exciting things are happening over at Robert Rodriguez’s El Rey Network.  As expected Rodriguez is mixing it up and this is not your old school TV cable network.

Where as Hollywood has a long standing rule known as “TV Q” or “Network Approved”,  that for the most part, dictate who gets cast in lead roles on television, it seems El Rey is breaking all the rules.

Case in point, the recent casting of Gabriel Luna, a relative new comer whose done roles on a few high profile shows like NCIS: Los Angeles and Prison Break and a nice role in the indie film Intramural.

The new El Rey drama series revolves around a “Latino James Bond” character named Antonio “El Matador” Bravo, which will be played by Luna.  He is an undercover soccor star who uses his career as a cover for his CIA activities which include the execution of missions as a covert operative.

The series, created by power producers Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Hawaii-5-O, Sleepy Hollow, Transformers)  goes into production in Los Angeles at the end of March.  Rodiguez will direct the first episode with Orci and Kurtzman executive producing and Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin, serving as showrunners with Heather Kadin, Rodriguez and El Rey co-founders John Fogelman and Cristina Patwa are also producing.

The series premiere is set premiere following the World Cup in July 2014.

Gabriel Luna is repped by Carissa Stewart and Peter Gallager of the Arch Talent Group.
