Out of the sixteen pilots ordered this year by FOX, only eight received a series order and out of those, only one features Latinos. Based on the award-winning Spanish TV series Polseres Vermelles show, Red Band Society is produced by ABC Studios in association with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television and stars three Latino actors and has two creatives behind the scenes.
Executive producer Sergio Aguero brought the show to Margaret Nagle (Boardwalk Empire) who wrote and adapted the series for American audiences and will be running the show.Much like current and past medical dramas, Red Band Society takes place in a hospital with the and revolves around teenagers who bond through their shared experience of being patients and it is narraged by a twelve-year old Charlie (Griffin Gluck) who is in a coma.
A provocative and unconventional drama, Red Band Society has a comedic streak fanned by patients and staff alike. The juvenile ward is run by Nurse Jackson (played by Academy Award-winning actress Octavia Spencer of The Help) and well-respected Dr. Jack McAndrew (Dave Annable) who oversees the treatment of the young patients.
The teenage patients, find themselves in their temporary home, which for Leo Roth (Charlie Rowe) temporary is now going on over a year. Sixteen year old Jordi Palacios (Nolan Sotillo), has has traveled from south of the Mexican border in search of medical treatment, and finds himself rooming with the non-too happy Roth. Other patients include 16 year-old Dash Hosney (Brian Bradley of the X Factor) who is suffering fro Cystic Fibrosis; and 15-year-old Emma Chota (Ciara Bravo, Big Time Rush) who has an eating disorder and is Leo’s on and off again girlfriend.
Wilson Cruz (Hustling, He’s Just Not That Into You) plays the trusted male nurse in the pediatric ward and Belita Moreno (George Lopez) plays one of the doctors in the pilot.
Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (Glee, American Horror Story) directed the pilot episode of Red Band Society.
Red Band Society is produced by ABC Studios in association with Amblin Television and is executive produced by Margret Nagle (Boardwalk Empire), Justin Falvey (The Americans, Falling Skies), Darryl Frank (The Americans, Falling Skies) and Sergio Aguero (No Reservations, Y Tu Mama Tambien).
