The COOList Film This Weekend
Are you kidding…animation, comedy and talking to the dead, what a winning combination for Latinos film audiences (they even dedicate a day to the dead — Dia de los Muertos). I predict, Paranorman will be a hit among Latino audiences this weekend, who will drive those boxoffice numbers, as they are #1 when it comes to going to the movies.
In ParaNorman, a small town comes under siege by zombies. The butt of everyone’s joke’s at school, the misunderstood kid at home, that’s who. Only local boy Norman (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), who is able to speak with the dead can help. In addition to the zombies, he’ll have to take on ghosts, witches and, worst, of all, grown-ups, to save his town from a centuries-old curse. But this young ghoul whisperer may find his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits.
The new 3D stop-motion comedy thriller from animation company LAIKA, re-teaming the company with Focus Features after the ground breaking Academy Award-nominated Coraline. ParaNorman, following Coraline, the company’s second stop-motion animated feature to be made in 3D.
The movie also tackles a lot of issues that will resonate with all audiences: Bullying, parents not understanding their kids and of course that one sole friend that understands and accepts you for what and who you are.
With several Latinos as part of the crew on this film, one can say that Latinos had a hand in what all audiences will see on the screen this weekend when they go see Paranorman.
