LALIFF to highlight its Opera Primas film category coming from Latin America, while U.S. Latino Films make breakthrough at this year’s festival
Los Angeles, CA – Pablo Ferro, respected film title designer, will receive the LALIFF GABI Lifetime Achievement Award for his accomplishments in the entertainment industry, the 16th Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF) announced today. In addition LALIFF will feature many Opera Primas with a wide variety of thematic interests from all over the world.
Pablo Ferro’s creation of title designs for more than 80 film and television shows, during his 40 year career, have made him the ideal recipient for the 2013 Gabi Lifetime Achievement Award. Ferro’s credits included classic films such as Dr. Strangelove and Thomas Crowne Affair to recent work like Beetlejuice, Men in Black and Good Will Hunting. “His immense contributions to the entertainment industry are a point of pride for the Hispanic filmmaking community,” said Marlene Dermer, Co-founder/Executive Director/Programmer of LALIFF.
The GABI Lifetime Achievement Award is named after the celebrated Mexican cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa, who is best known for films such as Macario, Pedro Paramo, and Luis Buñuel’s Simon Del Desierto. Upon receiving the GABI, Ferro will join prestigious past winners, including cinematographer Guillermo Navarro, Pan’s Labyrinth, and writer Pedro Almodovar, Talk to Her.
This year, LALIFF proudly showcases the works of 18 first time film directors in the Opera Prima catergory including the record breaking U.S. films Dreamer by Jesse Salmeron, Sleeping With Fishes by Nicole Gomez Fisher, and Water & Power by Richard Montoya. Additionally, some of our premieres include international titels like Carne de Perro (DOG’S FLESH) by Fernando Guzzoni from Chile, La Pisina (THE SWIMMING POOL) by Carlos Machado Quintela from Cuba, Potosi by Alfredo Castruita from Mexico (U.S. Premiere) Tanta Agua, by Ana Guevara and Leticia Jorge from Uruguay, Ponchao by Josh Crook with co-writter and lead actor Manny Perez from the Dominican Republic, Con La Pata Quebrada (BAREFOOT IN THE KITCHEN) by Diego Galan from Spain, We Woman Warriors (TEJIENDO SABIDURIA) Colombia Family Dynamic films, La Paz by Santiago Loza from Argentina, Meu Pais by Andre Ristum with Rodrigo Santoro as lead actor from Brazil, Jardin de Amapolas (FIELD OF AMAPOLAS) by Juan Carlos Melo Guevara from Columbia (U.S.Premiere), and Polvo (DUST) by Juan Hernandez Cordon from Guatemala.
“Its an exciting selection of diverse stories, a discovery first time feature directors a showcase of US Latino filmmakers and our official program sure to delight everyone. As we travel around our countries we share stories about family , love and personal journeys,” explained Dermer.
LALIFF’s documentaries, according to Dermer, are “powerful, thought provoking, entertaining and empowering.”
The Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF) will run from Thursday, October 10th, 2013 through Monday, October 14th, 2013 with regular screenings taking place at the TCL Chinese Theatre. STUDENT PASS $75 (with access to all regular screenings, excluding galas. Current student status verification required)
