The COOList Talk
Overheard at the Television Critics Assocation Press Tour
Twice a year over 220 television critics get together to talk to the talent, producers and network execs for the new broadcast, cable and public TV shows. Imagine yourself being able to ask any question your little heart desires of Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston, or the actors of the new much buzzed about ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. , or my favorite actors in a new series: Liev Schriber, Jon Voight and Steven Bauer are most excellent in Showtime’s Ray Donovan; Luis Antonio Ramos in ABC’s Lucky 7; and although a mid-season replacement, I am so looking forward to Resurrection and seeing Nicholas Gonzalez playing a cop. They all had their say at the TCA…here is just a sample of them representing!
Demian Bichir with Diane Kruger at the TCA
We start with Oscar nominated Demian Bichir (A Better Life) who stars in one of this season’s most talked about show The Bridge. This past week Bichir and his co-stars German actress Diane Kruger and American Annabeth Gish made an appearance at the TCA. When asked why he thought there were not more Latinos on American TV. He told it like it is:
“I don’t know. There’s one fact that is really crucial in this economy, at least in California: We spend a lot of money. Mexicans, Latins, Hispanics — we shop,” the actor said. “So advertisers need more windows to [introduce] their products.” Bichir added he has been surprised by the lack of Latinos on TV. “We have a lot of great stories to tell. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more in the future,” he said.
Watch The Bridge on FX on Wednesdays, 10PM
On Sunday, Luis Antonio Ramos talked about what it means to him to be part of the Lucky 7 cast.
“I’ve played bad guys in, like, every show on every network and every cable network. To then walk into something like Lucky 7 as an actor, especially as a Latin actor in the climate that this country is in right now, to represent somebody with a heart and soul and integrity, that’s big for me”.
He went on to add, “I was tired of playing bad guys and stabbing people in the neck and doing those kinds of things. It was, like, wearing me out. And as an actor. To have gotten these scripts… That’s the lottery for me, as an actor at this point in my life at this age, that’s like cash…”
Lucky 7, Premieres Tuesday, September 24, 10:00-11:00 p.m., ET
Thanks guys for using your spotlight to shine a light on the bigger issues that face Latinos in Hollywood!
