Who is the coolest teen on TV? Hands down, it has to be 14-year old Marcel Ruiz, who was born to be a film and television star.
We fell in love with him when we first saw him as “Alex Alvarez” in Norman Lear’s award-winning reboot of One Day At A Time on Netflix. He co-stars along side of Justina Machado, Rita Moreno, Todd Grinnell, and Isabella Gomez.
Currently, Ruiz nabbed a lead role in the faith-based film, The Impossible, directed by Roxann Dawson and produced by DeVon Franklin. The story is about a 14-year old boy in St. Louis, who—after crashing into a frozen lake—is pulled out by a local fireman after a life threatening 15 minutes. This harrowing story continues as John’s mother, Joyce, fights for his life against all medical advice and wisdom, and in the moment of her deepest despair her anguished cry to God brings John back to life. The film also stars Chrissy Metz (This Is Us) and Topher Grace (That 70’s Show), Josh Lucas (Sweet Home Alabama) and will be filmed in Winnipeg, Canada.
From One Day At A Time to booking a lead role in The Impossible, Ruiz recently commented about it.
“The audition process was much more difficult than One Day,” he explained in a media interview. “While One Day had about three auditions, for The Impossible, it was about seven auditions.”
He is super excited to be filming in Canada and is looking forward to experience some snow and cold weather. Ruiz portrays “John,” a teenager and basketball player, and is thrilled to be able to act out an emotional and dramatic story. John drowns but is brought back to life by the non-stop efforts of a fireman and his mother’s unconditional faith.
Before arriving to Hollywood aka Tinseltown at the age of 9, Marcel Ruiz was already a rising child star in his native San Juan, Puerto Rico, working as an actor and doing commercials. His parents are filmmakers, and said, “I was raised on a set.”
Ruiz recently wrapped Season 2 Netflix’s One Day at a Time, and is repped by Osbrink Talent Agency, DePaz Management, and Jackoway Tyerman Wertheimer Austin Mandelbaum Morris & Klein.
