NHMC, Televisa and Univision to Announce Diversity Programs for Latinos

Los Angeles, CA – The National Hispanic Media Coalition, Televisa Foundation and Univision Communications announced this morning the creation of a partnership for programs designed to increase diversity in entertainment and public policy, where Latinos are still severely underrepresented.

At a time when the entertainment industry has come under increased criticism for its lack of diversity, Univision and Televisa have stepped up to sponsor of the National Hispanic Media Coalition’s first Television Writers Graduate Program. The program will serve as a continuation of NHMC’s original TV writers program and include eight writers.  The program graduates working on original scripts over a period of four weeks. Participants in NHMC’s original writers program currently work on award-winning and top rated shows on ABC, NBC, CW, Disney Jr., Hulu and Netflix.

The media companies are also sponsoring NHMC’s Policy Fellowship Program for law students to learn about media and telecommunications policy issues from a civil rights and public interest perspective. Students will spend a week in DC or Miami observing English language production facilities at Univision. Alumni of the program have gone on to judicial clerkships, the FCC, non-profit organizations, and law firms large and small.

In all, Grupo Televisa, S.A.B. and Univision Communications Inc., two of the world’s leading media companies focused on serving Hispanics, announced their sponsorship of the first television writers graduate program, the Latino Scene Showcase, a writers’ database and a policy fellowship program in DC, run by the National Hispanic Media Coalition.

Attending today’s announcement were:

Gil Cedillo, Los Angeles City Councilmember, 1st District

Alex Nogales, president and CEO of National Hispanic Media Coalition

Axel Caballero, Executive Director, National Association of Latino Independent Producers

Roberto Llamas, Executive Vice President, Human Resources & Community Empowerment, Univision Communications Inc.
