NHMC Latino Mediacon & Expo Focus: The Power of The Latino Entertainment Consumer


July 20-21 at the Pasadena Convention Center

Pasadena, CA – The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) will be shining a spotlight on the “Power of the Latino Entertainment Consumer” at the recently announced 2012 Latino MediaCon & Expo taking place July 20-21 at the Pasadena Convention Center located at 300 E. Green Street in Pasadena, just a few miles outside of Los Angeles, California.

Not only will MediaCon convene industry executives, celebrity talent, media advocates and influencers to network, discuss trends and gain insight on emerging issues but will, on the second day open the Expo free to the public, inviting the U.S. Latino consumer  to attend and meet the celebrities and performers that connect with them through their talents and learn about the companies that are producing content targeted to them.

Latino MediaCon kicks off on the first day with the Opening Plenary entitled “The New General Market: Power of the Latino Entertainment Consumer” moderated by journalist and news anchor Rick Sanchez. This timely  panel discussion will have speakers such as Monica Gil, Senior Vice President of Government and Public Affairs for Nielsen and Julia Jenks, Senior Director of Global Strategy for the Motion Picture Association of America, offering a blueprint for reaching the Latino audience, a lucrative demographic over indexing in the media world from movie attendance to mobile usage and television consumption.

The morning sessions include topics such as “Decidimos: Will Latinos Decide the Presidential Election?” Univision’s Emmy Award-winning journalist Maria Elena Salinas will be joined by Matt Barreto, principal of Latino Decisions, Arturo Vargas, Executive Director of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials and Monica Lozano, publisher and CEO of La Opinión, the largest Spanish-language publication in the United States, to discuss the impact Latinos will have on Election Day.

Industry leaders including the President and CEO of VOXXI Emilio Sánchez will continue to captivate attendees with a dialogue on digital engagement in 2012 during the panel “Latinos in Social Media: Technology Leaders in the Digital World.”

This year the NHMC will celebrate its 10th Annual Local Impact Awards during a luncheon which ill recognize excellence in media and commitment to the Latino community with Emmy Award-winning journalist Laura Diaz and  Los Angeles DJ Big Boy of Power 106 as Masters of Ceremonies.  This year’s Impact Award honorees include Thomas A. Saenz, President and General Counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund and Marielena Hincapié, Executive Director of the National Immigration Law Center are acknowledged for their outstanding work on behalf of Latinos. KVEA-TV anchor Ana Patricia Candiani will also be honored for excellence in broadcasting. The Impact Awards Luncheon will be followed by a conversation with worldwide pioneer and entertainment industry leader Haim Saban, Univision Chairman and CEO of Saban Capital Group.

“Case Studies in Successful TV Programming” will lead the afternoon sessions with discussions on the strategies hit shows have used to connect with Latino audiences. The “Latinas Entertainment Institute.” will feature accomplished Latina women including Ligiah Villalobos, writer and executive producer of the independent feature film La Misma Luna, Elizabeth Avellán, producer of the successful Spy Kids franchise and films such as Desperado, Predators and Machete, and Patricia Riggen director of  La Misma Luna, which broke weekend box office records in the United States when it was released in 2007.  She recently wrote and will direct the feature Elsa & Fred starring Shirley Maclaine and Michael Caine.

A focus on Hollywood talent agencies which are critical the increase of Latinos in Hollywood, be it in front or behind the camera will take center stage.  Top agency heads that include Ivan de Paz, President and CEO of DePaz Management, will gather for the panel “Access Hollywood: Cracking the Code to Success in Tinseltown” to talk about how they identify and nurture talent.
