NHMC Calls for KTLA Anchor to Apologize for Racist Remark

NHMC Demands On-Air Apology from Chris Schauble

On Monday, June 11 KTLA 5 Morning News co-anchor Chris Schauble insinuated that bond hearings are as common to Latinos as baptisms and graduations. Chris Schauble made the comment while reporter Allie Mac Kay was interviewing manager and employees of El Coyote Mexican Restaurant, most of whom were Latino. Whether Chris Schauble knew his mic was on or not, his comment was clearly caught on air. Read the transcript below and watch the clip here.

Mac Kay (reporter): These employees here at the lovely El Coyote, some of them have been here; quite frankly, longer than some of you at the desk have been alive.

This man Billy, he has been here for over 30 years, you are the manager here, what is it like? It’s a total family atmosphere right?

Restaurant Manager: Right. That’s what keeps us all together, because it’s such a family, we know each other. We know their sons, their daughters, their parents, we go to their weddings, their baptismals, we share all our good times together…

Off camera:  Chris Schauble: …bond hearings…

“Schauble co-anchors a news show, not a satirical television program, and broadcasters, especially journalists, have a responsibility to serve the public. Chris Schauble made his remarks on air and must apologize on air as well,” stated NHMC’s President and CEO, Alex Nogales.

To date Schauble has ignored the request from NHMC and the please from suggestions from listeners and bloggers to apologize.

NHMC is encouraging members of the Los Angeles community to call KTLA President and General Manager Don Corsini at (323) 460-5447, to insist that Schauble apologize publicly.
