Director Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio, a modern reinvention of the classic tale of the wooden marionette boy, will premiere Dec. 22, Netflix announced.
Del Toro’s film won’t be an ordinary version of Pinocchio’s story as portrayed in the Academy Award-winning Disney classic, animated, musical film from 1940. While also based on Italian author Carlo Collodi's classic tale, the new film will be a live-action, stop-motion animated feature that takes place in the years preceding World War II. “Set during the rise of Fascism in Mussolini’s Italy, PINOCCHIO — a musical directed by del Toro and Mark Gustafson (FANTASTIC MR. FOX) with a score by Alexandre Desplat — is a story of love and disobedience as Pinocchio struggles to live up to his father’s expectations,” twitted Netflix.

Del Toro co-wrote the screenplay with Patrick McHale (Over the Garden Wall).
The film features an all-star voice cast with Ewan McGregor as Cricket, David Bradley as Geppetto, and newcomer Gregory Mann as Pinocchio. Other cast includes Finn Wolfhard, Academy Award-winner Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, Burn Gorman, with Academy Award-winner Christoph Waltz and Academy Award-winner Tilda Swinton.
Co-producing along with Del Toro are Lisa Henson for the Jim Henson Company, Alex Bulkley, Corey Campodonico for Shadow Machine and Gary Ungar. The movie is executive produced by Jason Lust (Peter Rabit).
