Natalie Morales’ ‘Spanish Lessons’ Defines True Friendship

It all starts with a Spanish lessons and it grows from there. Adam’s (Mark Duplass) husband surprises him with weekly virtual Spanish lessons. When Adam finally get onboard with the lessons tragedy strikes and his Spanish teacher, Cariño (Natalie Morales), becomes a lifeline he didn’t know he needed.  A kind of lopsided friendship develops and as he forges a complicated emotional bond with Cariño. The lessons bind them together and a friendship seems to begins just as it almost disappears. Language Lessons is a disarmingly sweet and touching tale of the exploration of platonic love. 

The award-winning collaboration between Carino and Adam is a love story about a long-distance friendship that just happens in spite of life getting in the way.

Morales directs Duplass in this film which is based on a teacher-student relationship that flourishes into something bigger. Written by Morales and Duplass the story is told in a series of online Spanish lessons. The film is produced by Mel Eslyn and Duplass Brothers Productions


Spanish Lessons was a SXSW Narrative Spotlight Audience Award and also won the Provincetown Best Narrative Film Audience Award. Provincetown Best Narrative Film Audience Award.

Spanish Lessons opens in select theaters nationwide on September 10 from Shout! Studios.
