Academy Award, Golden Globe and Emmy nominee Andy Garcia honored with ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’

The NALIP conference has a new vibe, it has been rebranded to grow with the times, it is now the NALIP Media Summit, and the name is not the only change to look forward to.  NALIP has a new Executive Director, Axel Caballero whose profile in new media and his vision are already breathing new energy into the 15th annual event that convenes top-level Latino industry professionals, content creators and visionaries to examine new trends in media making, development, distribution and production.  The NALIP Media Summit 2014: We Move You Forward is presented by HBO and convenes from June 5 – 8th at the Sheraton Universal Hotel in Universal City.

This year’s NALIP Media Summit  is presented by HBO and the National Latino Media Council. This year’s Chairs are Jimmy Mendiola (Pretty Vacant) and Alex Rivera (Sleep Dealer) along with the NALIP Board and Executive Staff.  It all begins on Thursday, June 5th at 2pm for registration and then at 4pm with two sneak preview screenings:


Food Chains – From Executive Producer Eva Longoria this award-winning documentary reveals the abuse of farm laborers in the United States, followed by a Q&A with the film’s director and producers.

Edge of Tomorrow – Tom Cruise’s newest sci-fi film followed by a Q&A with Warner Bros., SVP, Target Marketing Rick Ramirez.

A welcome reception will follow right after the screenings.

Friday, June 6th

Luncheon presented by HBO, featuring a lively discussion that will zero in on the current Latino state and future landscape within the feature narrative.  Speakers include 

Producer and founding partner of Canana, Pablo Cruz;

Talent Development VP at HBO, Kelly Edwards

Maker Studio’s executive producer, Alejandro Trevino; and

New York City’s new Film Czar, Cynthia Lopez.

The evening closes with a welcome reception at 6pm featuring the sounds of La Santa Cecilia, the 2014 Grammy Award winners for ‘Best Latin Rock Album.

Luncheon Keynote address by actor Wilmer Valderrama and showrunner Carlos Coto of El Rey Network‘s hit series From Dusk ‘Till Dawn: The Series.

After the day of panels discussions and networking, the Gala Award night.

Awards Gala  –  Comedienne Jill Michele Melean will MC the evening where NALIP will honor Hollywood’s most notable Latino luminaries:

Andy Garcia  – Legendary actor and producer will be awarded NALIP’s highest honor with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Raul Castillo, from HBO’s Looking, will be awarded the ‘Lupe Award’ in honor of the spirited and beloved Lupe Ontiveros.

Emilio Nicolas  – Media mogul Nicolas will be honored with the Pioneer Award.

Pantelion Films, a division of Lionsgate and Grupo TV, will take home the Outstanding Achievement Award for their advancement of positive Latino images in the media, as well as for being the first Latino Hollywood studio.

Ambulante/Canana, will be honored with the Media Advocacy Award, to be presented by United Farm Workers Union co-founder and civil rights activist Dolores Huerta.

In addition to these highlighted events, NALIP Media Summit 2014 will present an A-list lineup of ‘Conversations With’ and studio sessions, zeroed in on film, TV and the digital space.

Highlighted sessions include producer Gaz Alazraki, who is set to direct Netflix’s first Spanish-language original series, Marco Ramirez, writer of the Netflix series Orange is the New Black, Buzzfeed’s Adrian Carrasquillo, Richard Ray Perez, Director and Producer of Cesar’s Last Fast and co-founder of the MiTU Network Beatriz Acevedo.

Top level industry executives and influencers lead panel discussions on topics such as ‘Latino Writers on Mainstream Media Platforms,’ conversations with critically acclaimed writers from the hit show Girls and the upcoming FOX Gang Related.

Digital panels, featuring producers, writers and executives from Crackle, YouTube and Netflix – which are revamping and redesigning the way content is produced, distributed and consumed include ‘How to Develop a Successful Digital Series,’ ‘Digital Production Simplified,’ and ‘How to Market Your Content Digitally to Gain Maximum Exposure.’

For 15 years NALIP has been shepherding sensitive issues such how Latinos can achieve media parity; needed strategies need to advance Latinos in the entertainment industry. In light of the fact that Latinos comprise a mere 1% of executives in Hollywood; the percentage of minority industry writers in film and television has been frozen at 6% since 1999, and the percentage of minority directors is lower still, continued dialogue about these topics is crucial.

NALIP  has been the integral force in spotlighting esteemed and emerging Latino talent in front of and behind the camera in Hollywood providing the tools essential to succeeding in Hollywood.

In celebration of their 15th anniversary, NALIP will honor and feature 15 extraordinary NALIP members They include:  Maria Agui Carter (filmmaker), Natalia Almada (director), Richard Perez (director/producer), Cristina Ibarra (producer/director), Youssef Delara (Director), Carolina Paiz (writer/producer), Aurora Guerrero (writer/director), Sergio Guerrero (writer/director/producer), Julia Ahumada Grob (actor/writer/producer), Adrian Martinez (actor/director), Jaime Escallon (writer/director/producer), Nicolas Entel (director), Rodrigo Reyes (director), Tery Lopez, (WGA) and Gina Rodriguez (actor).
