Marisa Arbona-Ruiz is honored for co-producing groundbreaking PBS series Internet Safety 101®
Washington, DC — In a celebration of excellence in television, the National Capitol/Chesapeake Bay Emmy Awards presented Marisa Arbona-Ruiz, Mari Bonnemaison, Brooks Moore, and Donna Rice Hughes with the Emmy Award for producing an innovative and groundbreaking special series aired on PBS, Internet Safety 101® in the category of Information/Instruction – Program/Special. The exposé series was created by Donna Rice Hughes, president of Enough is Enough, and broadcast in three, one-hour television shows cut down from an original four. Its goal is to raise awareness of the vast, sexual predation and the tactics of illegal pornographers on the internet. Marisa Arbona-Ruiz is a collaborating partner of Bonnemaison, Inc. and joined the team as a co- producer, co-director and scriptwriter.
The program features in-depth, exclusive interviews, a live studio show and a teaching segment. The winning stories are: “Alicia’s Story,” featuring a teenaged girl rescued from a residential dungeon, told from the perspectives of Alicia, her mother and the FBI; “Confessions of a Predator,” featuring a teacher-turned-convicted felon and his modus operandi for approaching youth online; and “Grooming and Risky Behaviors,” featuring testimonials from law enforcement and youth in rehabilitation from being hooked and acting out on pornography. Marisa Arbona-Ruiz is a filmmaker/broadcast journalist and a bilingual screen actress and musician. She is the writer and co-producer of the syndicated news magazine show, Hispanic Business Today: American Success Stories on NBC that ran from 2011 through this year on 180+ markets nationwide. Genres of work include documentary, TV news and information, corporate, educational, PSAs and film. Early in her career she was also a contributing political cartoonist for Hispanic Link News Service. Her start-up company, ArbonaWorks Media, has recently completed PSAs featuring civil rights icon Dolores Huerta speaking out in support of LGBT issues for Familia es Familia. She has appeared in film, PSAs, commercials, and health videos and sang at the Latino Inaugural 2013 as a member of Cantigas, Washington DC’s premier Latino chorus, in honor of President Obama.
