“Mamitas” Coming of Age Story Hits Theaters May 27th

The COOList Indie Movie Weekend Release

USC thesis film gets theatrical release with top talent on board

Mamitas?  Don’t know what the title of this indie film that opens today has to do with the story, but hey the trailer looks good enough for me to go see it and find out.  The USC film was not only able to land some top talent, but it will have a limited theatrical release beginning Friday, May 27th (See listing of selected theaters below).

Shot in Echo Park just west of downtown Los Angeles, where the skyline lends it beauty as a backdrop to this coming of age romance.  EJ Bonilla and Veronica Diaz-Carranza star in this high school geek meets hot guy story.  At school, Jordin (Bonilla) is a cocky but charming Latino firebrand but at home he reverts to his real self.  A doting grandson with a cranky father he continuously and unsuccessfully tries to please.

After being suspended for insulting a teacher Jordin meets Felipa (Diaz-Carranza), a bookish, no-nonsense New Yorker.  An unlikely friendship ensues which pushes Jordin to re-examine who he really is.

Written and directed by first time director Nicholas Ozeki, Mamitas also some excellent seasoned actors:  The late Pedro Armendariz Jr. (Casa de mi Padre), Joaquim de Almedia (Fast Five), Jennifer Esposito (TV’s Blue Bloods), and producer/actor Jesse Garcia (The Avengers).

Mamitas was Ozeki’s USC thesis film, adapted from his short by the same name.  Ozeki was the an Independent Spirit Awards “Someone to Watch Award nominee, with his film showing at festivals across the country to excellent response.
