Lupe Ontiveros in “The Trouble With Tonia” Part of LATC La Mujer Sunday Summer Film Seri

Lupe Ontiveros’ Forever Fans are in for a treat, with the special presentation of the short film, The Trouble With Tonia, as part of the LATC’s La Mujer Film Series, Summer Screenings of 2018.


Join Director Juan Garza and Producer Linda LaRoche for a special reunion of friends, family, cast and crew for a special screening of the short film The Trouble With Tonia, starring the late Lupe Ontiveros. This film had its premiere on December14, 1990 at AFI.  Now, more than 27 years later, the Los Angeles Theatre Company (LATC), will once again bring the movie gem to the big screen.

The film’s revival honors the life, art and spirit of the great Lupe Ontiveros. The Trouble With Tonia will be presented at the Lupe Ontiveros Theatre at the Los Angeles Theater Center (LATC).

Aside from Ontiveros, the film also features: Harold Cannon Lopez, Yvette Cruise, Julia Sweeney and Guy Ecker. The short, shot in 16 mm film, runs 23 minutes, followed with a brief Q & A. In addition, the documentary, Chavela will also be featured also as part of LATC’s La Mujer Film Series.

“Lupe Ontiveros was a member of LATC and she meant a lot to everyone here. To be able to honor her and her legacy is very important to us, the Lupe Ontiveros Theater honors the actress, women in film, and Mothers,” said Artistic Director Jose Luis Valenzuela.

In The Trouble with Tonia, a cantankerous woman accidentally gets hit on the head; suffers a bout of amnesia, which turns herself, her family, and the neighborhood into a tailspin.

The Trouble with Tonia, was financed by grants from both The Independent Filmmaker project and Los Angeles City Cultural Affairs Department.
