Lupe Ontiveros & Civil Rights Changemakers Honored At MALDEF’s Gala

Edy Ganam will be presenting at the MALDEF Awards


On Thursday, November 14, MALDEF will host its 2013 Los Angeles Awards Gala at the Westin Bonaventure in downtown Los Angeles. Emmy Award-winning actor and MALDEF supporter, Jordi Vilasuso, famous for his role as Doctor Griffin Castillo on All My Children, will serve as this year’s Master of Ceremonies.  Devious Maids actress Edy Ganem will be one of the presenters.

The Awardees include:

Actress Lupe Ontiveros, (Posthumous Award) will be honored with the “Lifetime Achievement, Leadership in the Arts” Award. Ontiveros passed away in July of 2012 and is a beloved figure in the Latino and national arts and film communities.

José R. Padilla, Executive Director, California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc. (CRLA) will receive the “Lifetime Achievement, Excellence in Legal Service” Award.  Throughout his 35-year legal career at CRLA, he has advocated for the rights of California’s farm workers and rural communities.


Community and union organizer Paul Schrade will receive the “Lifetime Achievement, Excellence in Community Service” Award.  A former director of the United Auto Workers Union in California, Schrade was labor chair of Senator Robert F. Kennedy’s 1968 presidential bid.

Leaders from across the nation will be in attendance to celebrate the contributions made by honorees and to commemorate MALDEF’s efforts in advancing Latino civil rights across the United States.
