Los Angeles, CA —
Latino Public Broadcasting has commissioned the production of Street Knowledge to College, a documentary web series and online resources directed by award-winning filmmaker Jennifer Maytorena Taylor (New Muslim Cool, Special Circumstances, Paulina) and independent production company Specific Pictures. Emerging filmmaker Claudia Gómez will be co-producer on the project.
Launching in late spring 2012 for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s American Graduate, Street Knowledge to College will feature a dynamic collection of short films by and about at-risk students who are overcoming obstacles and successfully graduating high school. The youth attend FREE L.A., a community run school in South Central Los Angeles. The project will also include an online tool kit and resources for teachers, addressing the challenges that students face and offering strategies teachers can employ to tackle those issues and achieve success.
“CPB’s American Graduate is about inspiring at-risk youth to successfully graduate from high school” states Sandie Viquez Pedlow, LPB Executive Director. “We wanted to commission a project where teens could hear from other teens who have faced similar challenges and have made it against all odds.”
USC’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism is providing support for the project through a year-long research fellowship for director Jennifer Maytorena Taylor.
Geneva Overholser, Director of the Journalism School, remarks, “We at USC Annenberg are delighted to be part of this innovative project. Jennifer Taylor has brought back to us many interesting lessons in how to do journalism that engages the community.”
Street Knowledge to College will be made available to CPB American Graduate station and community hubs across the country
