Locarno Film Festival Recognizes Gael Garcia Bernal

Mexican Star Still Looks Into The Future Despite His Already Many Accomplishments

Locarno, Swizterland–Gael Garcia Bernal (Letters to Juliet, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Amores Perros) is one hard hitter to be recognized. Just 33, he has had the career of an accomplished actor for more than 20 years. Working on more than 40 films, shorts, and television programs, the Mexican actor gets honored big time. But while he gets recognized, he still believes in the journey rather than just accepting his accomplishments.

As a “Latino divo,” Locarno artistic director, Olivier Pere’s nickname for the actor, the Locarno Film Festival on Wednesday awarded Garcia Bernal for career excellence, the same award given to 66-year-old U.K. actress, Charlotte Rampling, earlier in the festival. Perhaps Garcia Bernal distinguished the age difference when he displayed a youthful exuberance, shaking the award over his head and using it to play air guitar, creating nods within the audience.

With all the hype of his young age and already winning an award of excellence in career, Garcia Bernal sort of backs up this statement. He confesses he still feels “green” as an actor mentioning, “I think I still have a lot of room to grow.” As a young actor with so many accomplishments, we would think what else is there left to do? But for Gael Garcia Bernal, the journey continues.

Currently, Garcia Bernal is filming Jonathan Jakubowicz’s film Hands of Stone with Robert De Niro. The actor is also a deep thinker and philosopher who always gives his fans and friends, food for thought… “Democracy should not be practiced every six years but every day.”
