Hollywood, CA – Lin–Manuel Miranda, the creator of the the successful bio-musical Hamilton has been cast in Mary Poppins Returns, the sequel to Walt Disney 1964 classic which made Julie Andrews (as Mary Poppins) and Dick Van Dyke (as the chimney sweep Bert) worldwide stars. Emily Blunt will play Poppins, the magical nanny so many generations have learned to love. Lin-Manuel Miranda will play a new character in the sequel, Jack the lamplighter.
The sequel of the Disney classic will be set in Depression-era London, and the two children from the original (Jane and Michael Banks) will be all grown up. Michael will have three of his own children.
To say Miranda is excited to have landed such a plumb role is an understatement. Yesterday he took to social media to announce that the official statement by The Walt Disney Company had been made: “I was waiting until it was official. It’s official!
Rob Marshall (Chicago, Into the Woods) is set to direct from an adapted script by David Magee (Life of Pi, Finding Neverland). Marc Platt and John DeLuca will also produce the new Disney film. Tony award winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman will create a new score and songs. Mary Poppins Returns is set to open on December 25, 2018.
