LHMI, a non-profit organization established the Indie Film Screening Series as a way to give Latino Indie filmmakers an opportunity to have their films seen by community.  Although most films are screened at film festival, their audience is limited to the cities and venues these festivals are organized. The LHMI Indie Film Screening Series looks to bridge that gap and get these films seen by more community audiences. The films selected for the LHMI Indie Film Screening Series are films with cultural relevance and/or that deal with social issues important to the underserved communities.

Actress Lourdes Colon was at the height of her career in 2010 when she received the ultimate death sentence—she was diagnosed with stage 4, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.  It was as if a nuclear bomb had exploded within her and engulfed every inch of her body.

Colon’s unique approach to overcome the deadly disease is chronicled in the groundbreaking documentary Create Option C: My Journey With Cancer. Colon’s life-threatening challenge—turned her into a researcher, nutritionist, spiritual guru and then a filmmaker. She had always wondered what her contribution to humanity would be and now she knew. She would communicate all that she was learning by filming each step of her battle as she created her own “Option C” of treatment through alternative medicine, organic nutritional and spiritual lifestyle with traditional western cancer treatments.  “Option C is to do the research, take the fear out of the equation and find out what works best for your body to cure the cancer,” Colon explained.

“We are proud to have the opportunity to present such a significant film,” said LHMI, Executive Director Bel Hernandez, “What Lourdes has been able to capture with this documentary has such a powerful message.”

Option C: My Journey With Cancer was made with a little help from her friends:  Executive producer/director Chris La Voy, executive producers actor/activist Esai Morales, Yeniffer BehrensDewayne Cox, and co-producer Daniel Rojo.  Through their collaboration  they have delivered a formidable documentary.

“Lourdes’ story is not only about hope, courage and inspiration,” said Mary Chuy, LHMI, Director, East Coast Film Screenings, and the event coordinator for the Los Angeles screening. “We are excited to share her film with Los Angeles. The film is more than an inspiration, it also educates and inspires”.

The Los Angeles screening will feature a red carpet stroll at 11:00AM, screening at 12:00 noon with a Q&A session afterwards with Lourdes Colon and cast. There will also be a special guest appearance by renowned alternative medicine expert, Dr. Nisim John, who will also take audience questions.

Many of Lourdes Colon’s celebrity friends are clearing their calendars to attend the screening to date, Esai Morales (The Brink), Nicolas Gonzalez (Water and Power, Resurrection Blvd.), Alicia Sixtos (The Fosters, East Los High 1&2), Andrea Sixtos (East Los High2), and Gabriel Chaverria (East Los High 1&2) with more celebrities coming on board every day.
