Legendary Play “Zoot Suit” Full Cast Announced

Center Theatre Group’s “Zoot Suit” at the Taper January 31 – March 12, 2017

Today the Taper has announced the full cast of the revival of the legendary production of Luis Valdez’s  legendary hit play Zoot Suit.  Rehearsals began this past Tuesday and they are in full rehearsal mode.  Almost forty years ago this play took Los Angeles by storm, opening in July of 1978, the play received such critical and audience acclaim, the play ran for a year and a half in Los Angeles, with most of the original cast going to New York to open the Broadway production edition at the Winter Garden Theater.  The same buzz seems to be repeating itself, making for brisk ticket sales, and a possibility the production may be sold out before its premiere date of February 12th (previews begin on January 31), and is set to run through March 12th.  Written and directed by Luis Valdez, Zoot Suit is presented in association with El Teatro Campesino.

The lead characters of the Pachuco (Demian Bichir), Henry (Jeremy Ray Valdez), Della (Jeanine Mason) and the Mother (Rose Portillo) and Dad (Daniel Valdez) were announced before the holidays.  The cast announced today includes (in alphabetical order), Brian Abraham, Mariela Arteaga, Melinna Bobadilla, Oscar Camacho, Stephani Candelaria, Raul Cardona, Fiona Cheung, Tiffany Dupont, Caleb Foote, Holly Hyman, Kimberlee Kidd, Rocío López, Tom G. McMahon, Andres Ortiz, Michael Naydoe Pinedo, Matias Ponce, Gilbert Saldivar, Richard Steinmetz, Evan Strand, Bradford Tatum and Raphael Thomas.

Choreographer for Zoot Suit is by Maria Torres, with music an lyrics composed by Lalo Guerrero, Daniel Valdez is the musical director, scenic design is by Christopher Acebo, costume designer Ann Closs-Farley, lighting designer  Pablo Santiago, sound design is by Philip G. Allen and projection design is by David Murakami. The associate director is Kinan Valdez and the production stage manager is David S. Franklin.
