The musical West Side Story is among the big winners of the 2022 Golden Globes, with wins for Latina actresses Rachel Zegler and Ariana DeBose. Also, the Colombia-set animated film Encanto and actress Michaela Jaé Rodriguez are among the victors who took home the annual prize presented by the Hollywood Foreing Press Association.
West Side Story, an adaptation of the Romeo and Juliet-inspired 1957 Broadway musical of the same title about forbidden love and rivalry between Puerto Rican and White gangs, earned a total of three awards. The Steven Spielberg-directed feature got the top honor for Best Picture – Musical/Comedy. Zegler won in the category of Best Actress - Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy and DeBose prevailed in the category of Best Supporting Actress - Motion Picture.
Zegler posted on Instagram: “our industry has and continues to have so many important discussions about how to properly represent its audience, and i truly believe our movie did just that. i think i can speak for each incredible person involved with ‘west side story’ when saying we appreciate the support and recognition we’ve received. and here’s to the hope that we continue to talk to each other for meaningful change in a world that is constantly evolving. from the bottom of my heart, thank you. xo r.”
For her part, DeBose also expressed gratitude on Instagram while at the same time apparently commenting on representation and inclusivity in film and TV. She posted, “Swipe. Thank you” and added a thank-you emoji with dark-skin hands and the hashtags #latinosinfilm, #afrolatina, #queertalent, #musicalsrock. DeBose is an Black Latina of Puerto Rican descent who also describes herself as a queer-indentifying woman.
Encanto won one of three Golden Globe nominations.

Another Latina winner is Rodriguez, who took the prize for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Drama for her role in Pose. She made history as the first trans actor in history to win a Golden Globe. Rodriguez also took to Instagram to post a spiritual response to her victory. She said, “Last night I reflected on who’s truly orchestrating this whole journey for me and that’s the one above! I’m not hurting anymore. This was Gods plan. Spreading love is the true way!
