Hollywood Woos Latinos on the Occasion of Cinco de Mayo
Los Angeles, CA — Recent statistics highlighting the growth of the U.S. Latino population (now at 16% ); as a consumer market and avid movie watchers (representing more than one-quarter of the movie going audience); and a major factor in the upcoming presidential elections, have made Latinos a major focus of two very important events focused on Latinos in Hollywood. And since the perceived “important” Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo is this weekend, two major Hollywood entities are out doing themselves to address the important issues concerning Latinos in Hollywood, both on the same day — Thursday, May 3rd:
SAG-AFTRA will present The Latino Voice: Changing the Hollywood Landscape in honor of the Latino contributions to the entertainment industry. Members of SAG-AFTRA are invited to the discussion which will focus on the accomplishments and challenges of Latinos in the media. Designed to focus on the current issues facing union performers, this event was conceived and funded by the legacy SAG Ethnic Employment Opportunities Committee.
Panelist include: Emmy® & Alma award-winning actor Jimmy Smits (Mother & Child, L.A. Law, Star Wars II & III), Oscar™-nominated director Chris Weitz (A Better Life, Twilight: New Moon, About a Boy) casting directors Renita Gale (commercials, Spun), and Roger Mussenden (X-Men, X2, Valkyrie) filmmaker / casting director Risa Bramon Garcia (200 Cigarettes, Twister, Roseanne) with panel moderator actor/screenwriter/producer, Yareli Arizmendi (A Day Without a Mexican, America). The Panel begins at 7:00 p.m. and will be followed by a reception begins at 8:30 p.m. at the James Cagney Room at the SAG-AFTRA offices at 5757 Wilshire Boulevard on the ground floor, Los Angeles, CA 90036. Meanwhile the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ (ATAS) sold out event HOLA! The Phenomenal growth of Latino Telelvision will be held at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills. The evening will explore & celebrate the unprecedented success of Latinos in English and Spanish program television. It will also serve as a membership drive for the ATAS.
