Major Latino star talent at the upcoming 2018 Television Emmy Awards on Sunday September 17th have already made a strong presence as nominees in the acting categories and could possibly walk away with the top prizes at the awards ceremony.

Antonio Banderas stars as Pablo Picasso, Nat. Geo’s Genius: Picasso


Antonio Banderas demonstrated his proven talents in his portrayal of the mature internationally renowned artist Pablo Picasso from age 40 until his death at age 91 in National Geographic’s television 11 part mini- series Genius: Picasso. Banderas is nominated as Best actor in a movie or limited series. It was a dream come true for Banderas, who was born in Picasso’s hometown of Malaga Spain, to be able to play the arts icon in a motion picture. The actor had to shave his head and remove his eyebrows and endure five hours of makeup every day for five months in order to become Picasso for the cameras. Banderas was previously nominated for an Emmy for his performance as Pancho Villa in the HBO film, And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself.

FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story is nominated for Outstanding Movie/Limited series and provided three leading roles and Emmy nominations for Venezuelan Edgar Ramirez, Puerto Rican Ricky Martin and Oscar winning Spanish actress Penelope Cruz. Ramirez plays the Miami based Italian fashion icon Gianni Versace who built a fashion empire with the help of his sister Donatella played by Penelope Cruz. Ramirez gained 20 lbs of weight and hours in the makeup chair in order to create a resemblance to Versace who was murdered by a serial killer in 1997. Ricky Martin plays Antonio D’Amico, Gianni Versace’s lover. Audiences fail to realize that Martin has been performing professionally since he was a child on stage, television and film extending into a successful music career. Both Ramirez and Martin are nominated in the Best Supporting actor category Movie/ limited series for their work. Cruz who transformed herself as the blonde Italian fashion designer in this mini-series marks her first foray into television and her first Emmy nomination as Best supporting actress. She won the Best Actress Oscar for her title role in Woody Allen’s Vicky Christina Barcelona and was nominated previously for Almodovar’s Volver.

John Leguizamo in Waco


John Lequizamo is also nominated as Best Supporting actor in a movie/limited series for Paramount Network’s six part mini-series Waco, based on the 1993 -51 day stand-off between the ATF, The FBI and David Koresh’s Branch Davidians religious faction. Lequizamo plays Jacob Velasquez, a fictional version of an undercover ATF agent sent in to infiltrate Koresh’s Waco, Texas religious sect. The multi-talented actor is a three time Emmy Nominee and won in the outstanding performer in variety or music program for his star turn in Freak.

The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards will honor the best in U.S. prime time television programming from June 1, 2017 to May 31, 2018, as chosen by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The ceremony will be held on September 17, 2018 at the Microsoft Theater in Downtown Los Angeles, and will be broadcast on NBC. The 2018 nominations were announced by Ryan Eggold and Samira Wiley on July 12, 2018.
